10 GOOD Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is tomorrow (OMG)! Do you have your Mother’s Day gift yet?! I think only Christmas and Thanksgiving may rival this day. This special day marks its beginning, in the United States at least, in the 1900’s. Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world. Whether we celebrate Mother’s Day in March or May or any other month, we are given the opportunity to collectively acknowledge the importance of motherhood and to honour our mothers. So what are some Mother’s Day gift ideas we could use as part of the celebrations? Keep reading …

In this blog post I will share with you 10 GOOD Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.

First up, FREE Gifts!

The best price tag, in my opinion, is FREE. “Rona V. not everything FREE is good.” As usual, give me the opportunity to present some good FREE gifts. Keep an open mind and come along with me.

1. Pray for mama

Our moms have always been praying over us, it is our turn to pray over them. Call her up or stop by and take a few minutes giving God thanks for her. Open your mouth and declare God’s decrees over her. Speak LIFE over your mom!

2. Create her playlist

What type of songs relaxes mom, gets her singing at the top of her lungs, or better yet, “drop two legs” (dance)?  Download it. Label it. Send it.

Download a couple of her favourite movies or episodes. Allow her to binge-watch (just this once).

3. Shout out

If mom is into social media, well my dears, let the “Big UPs” begin and roll those wonderful mom footage! Create a montage or gallery of “Mom’s Greatest Hits” – important family moments, the times she got dressed to the nines, onstage moments, her culinary creations, ticking off some things on her bucket list, and so forth and so on. Can you not see the IG story?

Create what I will call a “Greetings From Across The World” (find a Jamaican and ask them about this). Reach out to your siblings first, then anyone else whom she may have mothered, be sure to include those who have witnessed her mothering prowess, and ask them to do short video clips (whip out their Smart device that has a camera). We want to hear why mom is “Oh so Wonderful”. Edit, package and share with mom. Standby with a hanky, the waterworks may start.

Umm! (Light bulb) Dinner and a movie featuring “Oh so Wonderful Mom”.

4. Roll back the curtains

Let us take mama’s memories out of funeral programmes and instead create a keepsake scrapbook for her. Go unearth some of those “Remember When” photographs. In your digging you may come across some negatives. 40-Forwarders, can you not hear the Youngins going, “Neggie who?!” 🙂 Take the opportunity to pass on some history.

Ok Youngins, print off a few pictures from your phones or create a special digital photo album. Make it a full on production – emojis, Gif, enhancements – get your creative on!

5. Day off

Mothers, sit back, your children got you! Children, get to work. Mom should not, shall not, ain’t gonna do nothing. Chillax mothers! Clean up, shopping, meal prep, refereeing, attending to bruises – all taken care of mom. You are off duty!

Take it up a notch and create a 3- or 4-course meal of all mom’s favourites. Take out the fancy China, flatware and glassware. Hop on YouTube and learn how to create a beautiful napkin fold(s). Top it off with a printed menu.

6. Say something sweet

Write an ode to mom. Pen her a love letter. In Jamaica we would say, “Give har good lyrics”, like this …

A mother knows what a child does not say. Who pick us up when we fell, who told us the stories or kiss the injuries to make them better?

Mothers are the truest friends when problems falls on us; adversity takes the place of prosperity; friends desert us & trouble comes; they are there with kind precepts & counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness & cause peace to return to our hearts.

7. You

Mom may simply want to spend time with you. Yup! That’s it. No better Mother’s Day gift for her.

Just show up! Clear your calendar and go surprise her!

The most the above will cost you is time and effort. The result? PRICELESS!

To round out the 10, you will have to drop a few coins. My dear 40-Forwarders, I am going to take the opportunity to send some support to a few entrepreneurs (local, in Jamaica) in our clan, and guess what? Two are youngins who are making moves with their God-given gifts and there is a “surprise” 40-Forwarder.

8. Flowers

Unless mom is allergic, you cannot go wrong with flowers. Whether you want to get her a beautiful arrangement or a potted plant or both, go for it.

For potted plants that are cared for with loving attention, consider calling or DMing the “Flowers General”, Gary Smith. He is a 40-Forwarder with a passion for growing and nurturing plumes and petals! So much so, he turned his entire roof into a nursery.

By the way, have you thought of getting landscaping done for mom? Call or DM the “Flowers General”.

Then there are flowers of a sweet kind! “What are you talking about Rona V.?” Let me introduce you to you Ana-Alicia, the talent behind Batter Up. Di girl can bake and she makes everything from scratch, including the butter cream! Oh, she is no ordinary baker. She makes handcrafted flower bouquets with her cupcakes.

I got one for Mums’ birthday and let me tell you my dears, “YUM is the word!” Her cakes are as yummy, or should I say yummier, than they look. Don’t take my word for it, go knock on this youngin’s door, call or DM, and wait for your mom’s rave review!

9. Gift basket or box

Again, you cannot go wrong with this. What does mom like? What’s your budget? Deidre Taylor of Taylorsdecorandplanning got you. In this pandemic, our youngin took lemons and made lemonade (more on her story to come). She stepped out and tek off!

10. Pamper

Spa days go a long way! A body massage to remove those kinks. A foot massage will have mom walking on Cloud 9.

I am sure mom would enjoy a manicure and/or a pedicure. Or how about getting her hair done? Some spas may provide this service, or better yet search online for the closest mobile cosmetologist. Bring the pampering to her.

If you have been busy, and you have not yet gotten something special for your mom, these are some GREAT last minute gift options.

Let me pause, to acknowledge, that there are some who have lost their moms and this season is particularly hard for you. Cry if you must, it’s Ok. You have lost someone precious. I’m sure you can relate to the lyrics of this Shirley Caesar song, “I remember mama and the love that she gave. Although my mama’s gone, she’s right here in my heart…”

Then there are mothers who have lost their child(ren) and again, this season is painful. Cry if you must, it’s Ok. Remember the beautiful gift you had and take comfort in those great memories.
